Broadcom BCM4334 (Wi-Fi) chip is the one of most special inclusions in iPhone 5, replacing BCM 4330 Chip for Air Drop functionality. This chip is quite similar to BCM4330 Chip, which has already been installed in the new iPad and iPhone 4S but BCM4334 is stated to have an added advantage in terms of processing.
BCM4330 Chip operates with 65nm where as BCM4334 takes it down to 40nm. It offers a huge reduction in power consumption by the chip. Definitely, it’s not yet finalized with final design and serial production but it is expected to bring a 40-50% power profile reduction.
In Apple’s terminology, as pre press copy “Air Drop” is the new OS X Lion technology. This technology enables the direct connection between two Macs with a wireless connection. So it’s the direct connection to transfer files in between Macs using Wi-Fi.
‘Air Drop’ finds nearby Macs and establishes wireless connections with them. Mean while the Wi-Fi connection used for the Air Drop is termed as ‘Airport’ or sometimes ‘Airpot Extreme’.
The fact that makes it interesting is that with Air Drop file transfer is far more quick and easy. Most importantly it is safer as no in-between computers and internet connections are involved. Moreover, Air Drop is based on TLS Encryption which itself creates a fire wall to avoid unauthorized access and securing the connection.
What is so important with this fifty percent power reduction in Wi-Fi chip
Why this power profile reduction in Wi-Fi chip is so important!
1. This will help adding a bigger screen to iPhone 5.
2. 4G LTE connectivity
3. Reduction in battery thickness making iPhone even thinner
Important features of BCM4334 Wi-Fi Chip
1. Direct Wi-Fi support
2. Dual band Wi-Fi for Air Drop
3. First ever Apple’s standard iOS compatible Air Drop chip
4. In Designing process specially for iPhone 5 with iOS 6 firmware
5. Operates at 40nm
Various late models of MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, MacBook, iMac, Mac Pro are the generations of Mac compatible with Air Drop.
